In the early Ming dynasty, he was one of several painters summoned to paint portraits of the ancient worthies. When Chao refused, however, he was then executed. Chao Yüan has painted here a secluded thatched dwelling under trees and by the water. Various trees dot the landscape from the foreground to the background. The composition is very simply rendered. Done with a blunt brush often held at an angle to create the texturing of the earthen and mountain forms, there is very little use of wash. The result is a natural and easy-going work that reveals an air of simplicity and elegance
