Different theories exist as to the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival. Some think it relates to the belief in dragons and in some places the 5th day of the 5th month (when it takes place) is thought to be evil, necessitating rituals to dispel its influence. The festival was finally combined with the ceremony in memory of the drowned poet-statesman of the 4th-3rd century BC, Ch'ü Yüan. An important event is the Dragon Boat regatta. Here, 3 such boats are shown. The one in the middle is ornate and the ones in front and back have banners with gongs and drums as the bystanders accentuate this raucous scene.
