He was a native of Kiangsu province, and his style name was Ting-chih. He served as an administrative assistant in Ch'üan-chou, Fukien province, in 1333 and 1334. He excelled in painting bamboo in monochrome ink and studied the works of Chao Meng-fu (1254-1322) of the Yüan dynasty and the famous Sung dynasty bamboo artist Wen T'ung. Ku An's brushwork is vigorous; whether twigs in the wind or stems in the mist, his strokes and washes capture the spirit. His calligraphy followed the style of Chao Meng-fu. Ku An's bamboo is known for its feeling of animation and varying ink tones. This work describes bamboo on a clear day. The brush is wielded with strength and firmness, possessing a controlled solidity. The bamboo shoots are rendered with a gentle touch, capturing both the resemblance and the spirit of the plant. The work was completed in 1360.
