His style of painting derived from that of Chan Meng-fu (1254-1322). Water chestnut boats gracefully scurry back and forth over the river thick with the leaves of plants. Almost half of the painting consists of sky, lending a feeling of vastness to the scene. This is an especially elegant and beautiful work. The second son of the famous Yuan dynasty painter-calligrapher Zhao Mengfu, his style of painting also followed in the family tradition. He excelled at landscapes, specializing particularly at figures and saddled horses. In this painting, boats to pick water chestnuts gracefully scurry back and forth over the river thick with the leaves of these plants. Almost half of the painting is left blank to represent the sky, lending a feeling of vastness to the scenery. The coloring here is warm and elegant, with brushwork that is light and beautiful. The brushwork of the trees and foliage derives from the Li Cheng and Guo Xi tradition. The signature on this work reads, “Painted by Zhongmu on the fifteenth day of the tenth lunar month in the second year of the Zhizheng reign (1342).” This painting was thus done when the artist was about 53 years old by Chinese reckoning.
