One of the Four Yüan Masters, Ni Tsan was noted for his paintings of landscapes as well as bamboo and rocks. Ni Tsan's nephew Hua Tzu-wen once sought to study painting with him. In answer to his request, Ni produced this album. Composed of 10 leaves, the sketchbook contains individual ink drawings of trees, bamboo, hills, and rocks, and is accompanied by explanations of the respective painting methods. Ni Tsan did not seek to express profundities in these commentaries, but many concerning methods were unprecedented at the time. This sketchbook was done at the age of 49.
