Receiving the kung-shen civil service degree, Wen retired after the fall of the Ming in 1644. He followed but adapted the family style of painting and calligraphy, modeling his landscape paintings after those of Ni Tsan and Wang Meng. Depicting a lotus pond on a clear summer day, two blossoms have fully opened as a kingfisher perches on one of the stems. This work seems to be more in the “boneless” wash method than the “out-line” brushstroke one. The light and refined coloring reveals the delicate nature of the plants. Brushwork is smooth and graceful for an elegant effect. Thus, the title inscribed in the upper right is thus entirely appropriate for this work. &*文從簡（西元一五七四－一六四八年），江蘇長洲人。為文徵明曾孫，字彥可，號枕烟老人。崇禎間考取貢生，明亡，入清不仕。書畫皆傳家學，而稍加變化。書法兼有唐李邕，畫法兼有元倪瓚、王蒙筆法。本幅畫荷塘清夏，紅蓮盛開。翠鳥停於蓮梗。畫有勾勒、沒骨兩種方法，此幅可屬後者。設色則以青蓮紅花相映，雅淡之極。用筆亦婉約，一派幽雅。題詩「水面聞香」，可謂恰當。
