英文摘要:Ketsaichi (Taiwanese Opera) has been for generations a kind of folk art, which comes from native soil and is characteristic of the most genuine living force of this soil. Before the increasingly grotesque, fantastic programs did not make their appearance, no Taiwanese locals, who “start working in sunrise, and rest in sunset,” could be immune from its appeal. It’s topics, more often than not, are Chinese traditional virtues as well as ever-changing transient life. And the stereotype actors or actresses produce a drama neither fictional nor realistic. Thus, like the characters in the play, Ketsaichi’s development has been both ever-changing and unpredictable. Owing to the political repression of Taiwanese language, the local Taiwanese Ketsaihsi and Putaihsi (Hand Puppet Shows) gradually declined. Local consciousness, however, has, for the time being, been arising, and then local culture has been awakening and regarded more highly than ever before. Impacted by the currently pluralistic entertainment, in order to revive its past glamour, to elevate itself, or to be adapted to modern theater, Ketsaihsi in terms of contents has become “sophisticated Ketsaihsi,” and in the light of performance stage has transformed into “modern theater Ketaihsi.” The so-called modern theater Ketaihsi is a sort of modern Ketaihsi. And this paper is designed to research the current features and characteristics of modern theater Ketaihsi and its possible future development. In the meantime, this paper aims to introduce its spirit of age to modern society, hoping to spark the interests of the public. In addition, this paper makes a brief introduction of the historical development of modern theater Ketaihsi. And its features will be shown by means of drama scripts, music and stage arts. In this way, the public could get a better understanding of modern theater Ketaihsi. Key Words: sophisticated Ketaihsi, modern theater Ketaihsi, script, music, stage art.
