- 中文摘要:本研究透過文獻資料蒐集、統計資料分析及實際田野調查與訪談，以台中縣東勢鎮作為研究區，從十八世紀漢人入墾以來一直到現今為主要研究時間，並分為清領時期、日治時期、戰後民國時期等三個時期來討論。探討在不同歷史時期影響聚落與市街發展的機制，以呈現東勢鎮聚落與市街發展之演變，並具體勾勒出聚落形成發展之脈絡。 東勢聚落的發展受地理位置的影響很深，並影響到各時期政府對東勢的政策，清領時期由於清廷需要軍工料木造船，而於當時禁止漢人越界開墾的土牛界外的東勢角設軍工廠，帶來了大批的匠人，而有初期聚落匠寮的產生；日治時期，由於東勢地處平地與山地交界處，不管是台灣森林的開採或山地原住民的平定，東勢鎮都居於重要地位，因此逐漸成為附近山城地區的行政及商業中心；戰後民國時期，由於中部橫貫公路的興建與大雪山林場的開發，東勢鎮因地理位置之故，成為中部橫貫公路入口與全國林業發展重鎮，使東勢鎮繁榮一時，但好景不長，隨著政府各項工程的完工與大雪山林業公司的提早結束營業，東勢鎮由絢爛一時回歸到平淡的農業生活，加上東勢鎮本身之經濟資源有限，缺乏引進外來人口之條件，人口外流嚴重，九二一大地震後，東勢鎮整體之商業活動亦跟著逐漸衰退。 在市街發展方面，東勢鎮整體的發展受地形影響很大，由於境內丘陵起伏，屬於台灣中部典型山地丘陵地帶，僅於大甲溪東岸的沿岸河階有少數平地，是全鎮集居規模最大的街坊區。若以歷史的角度來看，由清領時期的匠寮、日治時期的本街、戰後初期的豐勢路、民國七○年代的三民街、民國八○年代興起的中正路，每個時期都有其不同的發展；若以地形來看，東勢的發展是沿著河階不斷一階一階往上發展的，從初期西邊的大甲溪畔，逐漸往近山的東方發展，呈現出南北帶狀的狹長形聚落形態。
- 英文摘要:The thesis is about Tung-shih. It’s in Taichung County. The main topic of this dissertation is to probe settlement and commercial streets development in Tung-shih during different historical periods. The research is made by collecting documents, analyzing statistics, and investigating fields. I aim at finding out the different characteristics existing in different periods in Tung-shih, and the critical factors behind the scenes resulting in the change. The research periods is from 18 century to now, which later I divide into three parts. The develop of Tung-Shih is great influenced by it’s position. And it also changed the policy in different period. In the Ching-Dynasty, because of the great needs of woods to build warships, the government built a military factory in Tung-Shih where was away from the living boundary. And brought many carpenters to there, so it formed the first settlement in Tung-Shih named Jiang-Liao, it means the house of carpenters. During the Japan-governed period, because Tung-Shih was located in the middle of the mountain area and the plain, so no matter hewed the woods or appeased the Indigenous Peoples in the mountain area, Tung-Shih’s location was very important. During this period, Tung-Shih became the administrative and commercial center of vicinal areas. After the WWII, because the built of the Central Cross-Island Highway and the develop of the Ta Hsueh Shan forestry, Tung-Shih became the entrance of the Central Cross-Island Highway and the important forestry center of the nation. This period is the most prosperous times in Tung-Shih. But after all the other projects established by the KMT Government were completed and the close of the Ta Hsueh Shan forestry Corporation, Tung-Shih lost it’s superior in location. So the major economic activity in Tung-Shih was changed from commerce to agriculture. Because the lack of itself economical resources, Tung-Shih lacks condition of the introduction non-native population, the population outflow is serious. After the 921 earthquake, the commercial activity in Tung-Shih was decline slowly. In the develop of commercial streets, Tung-Shih was great influenced by the terrain. Because within the boundaries the knoll fluctuation, belongs to middle Taiwan the typical mountainous region rough terrain, only has the minority flat land to the Tachia River east bank coast river step, is the entire town resides collectively the scale biggest neighbor area. If looked by the historical angle, Tung-Shih had different looks in different period. Like Jiang-Liao during Ching-Dynasty, main street in Japan-governed period, Feng-Shih Road after WW II, San-Ming Street in the 70’s, and the Zhong-Zheng Road develop in 80’s. If looked by the terrain, the development of Tung-Shih is upward develops along the river step unceasing first order first order, from the initial period west Tachia River bank, gradually develops toward the near mountain East, presents the north and south belt-shaped long shape settlement shape.
