This study adopts a combination of empirical and humanistic approaches to the understanding of “the essential structure of locality” in Taiwan. One of the villages in the central part of Taiwan is selected for a close-up and in-depth research: the Dong-Yung village of the Taichung County. This village is composed of 11 neighborhoods, including 588 household units, and a total of 2521 people. This study aims to understand how religious beliefs and ritual-related contents and activities constructed the sense of place for the villagers, and formulated the substance of locality and spatial orientation for the village as a whole. The approach of this study is based on two methodological concepts: (1) this study intends to see, to understand things and to collect primary research materials “from the native’s perspective.” This has similar ideas and methodological implications as portrayed by cultural anthropologist Clifford Geertz. Therefore, from the outset, this study treats the village people primarily as local religious subjects, not as the rational, dispassionate, individualistic modern subjects. From their local perspective of things, this study intends to re-build their understanding of their own lived space and their physical organization of locality. (2) What concerns this study most is not the religious beliefs themselves, not the rituals, nor the legends and mystical experiences, nor the believers’ social organizations. What really matters to this study are the actual spatial deployments of these religious beliefs and those ritualistic activities. This study takes each household (each officially registered domestic unit) as the basic individual unit of locality, with its own specific location and spatial occupancy. Through door-by-door interviews and comprehensive investigations, for about a three-year time period, this study probed and actually gathered key information about their religious orientations, their participations in the local ritualistic duties, and their daily, monthly and yearly worship activities, their various affiliations with local religious organizations and temples. The result has rendered many valuable data information and empirical source-materials. From the analysis of the empirical data-materials as gathered, this study has outlined a relatively integrated picture of the deeper connection between the religious beliefs and the construction of locality. Religion in this sense is no longer a narrowly defined worship of divinities, nor the faith of the mystical, but a way of life among and between actual residential households in a specific place. It is a well-constructed “symphony” of the local inhabitants, their deities, their lived spaces, and the geographic realm of shared natural configurations and places. It is the enchanted spatial articulations and practices of the religiously formulated view of life and world. This study, therefore, provides a model to understand the locality of a common village in Taiwan. Further, this model sets a ground for the understanding of the essential connection between the structure of locality and the religious practices among the grass-root people of Taiwan.
