英文摘要:This research aims to explore the construction of contemporary Pingpu identity in Puli Township. The research focuses not only upon the discourse of Kahabu people , but also includes all kinds of discourse about Kahabu , such as the viewpoints of academia, medium, government and etc. This is an arena entangled with history, society , culture, and politics in contemporary Taiwan. In this essay, I discussed three issues. Firstly, I wanted to rethink the ethnic name and categorization of the so-called Pingpu peoples. I used historical records, considering its regional formation processes, to deconstruct the name of Pazeh and re-present the history of the Kahabu. Furthermore, I also discussed the formation and the persistence of the ethnic consciousness of local people. In order to understand the way of maintaining Kahabu identity, I explored their historical memories and their interactions with other ethnic groups. I tried to find out how they perceive each other and how their ethnic boundary is defined. Thirdly, I proposed to rethink the Pingpu Movement regarding ethnic identity. In the course of Kahabu movement , we encountered a lot of discourses under the name of Kahabu in order to build up a contemporary Kahabu image. Thus , how to interpret it is also my main concern in this thesis.
