英文摘要:Phoenix halls play a crucial role in Puli’s folk beliefs. The essence and ideology of the belief in phoenix halls stress individual’s self-cultivation and beneficence and groups’ mutual help and cooperation. With the essence of the belief, sutra reciting in the phoenix hall becomes the basic rule of thumb for “cultivation and beneficence accumulation”. In addition, with the concept that the merits of “beneficence” can be amassed and transferred, many concepts and precedents regarding good vs. evil and karma vs. retribution, such as “poem rendering, couplets and good-word giving”, “virtue cumulative place” and “yin-yang assembly and flying phoenix meeting” have been derived to encourage continuation and promotion of moral culture in society. Given that practice is emphasized in Puli’s phoenix belief, spirit-writing training is used to pave the way for phoenix halls to carry out future caring and edification of religious principles, other than passing along the phoenix belief. Furthermore, with the common creed of cooperation, phoenix halls have mutually communicated, learned and supported to reinforce their cooperative relationship, which has formed Puli’s Phoenix Hall belief system. Moreover, through religious network, phoenix halls have established their relationships with other religious sects and temples, promoted establishment of the “Hong Dao (doctrine promotion) Association”. In the process, the god worship rules and etiquette in the phoenix hall belief system have been stressed. As a result, “phoenix hall phenomenon” is generated in Puli’s folk beliefs.
