(20110204)&* Zeng Guoquan (style name Yuanpu), a native of Xiangxiang in Hunan, was the younger brother of Zeng Guofan, the famous Hunan general. In the Xianfeng era (1851-1861), he accompanied his brother in rooting out and exterminating Taiping rebel troops in Jiangxi, Hubei, and Kiangsu provinces, receiving numerous awards for merit. In calligraphy, Zeng followed the tradition of Ouyang Xun, his style being simple and archaic. This work is a seven-character couplet in semi-regular script that reads, “At the northern window is placed Tao’s bed” and “The Pan Palace first selected Duke Xi of Lu.” The lines come from poetry by Su Dongpo and are done in centered brushwork with running script elements. Although not similar to the tight and precipitous manner of Ouyang Xun, all the character forms still have a dignified appearance and fluid force. Mr. Ch’en Kuei-ch’ing donated this work to the National Palace Museum in 1995.(20110204)
