(20120104)&* Matron Official was a female official managing palace affairs. Starting in the Eastern Han, she was responsible for writing memorials and documents, requiring a gift for calligraphy. She had the rank of 3 in the official hierarchy. Madam Feng became a palace student at 11, and with her precocious talent became Matron Official at 15. In this fine rubbing, the characters are sharp and clear. Though not a superlative Wei stele, it is still noteworthy for many fine areas of well-engraved calligraphy, both brush and knife complementing each other in this rubbing donated by Messrs. Chuang Yin, Chuang Chieh, and Chuang Ling. Originally in Chuang Yen’s collection, the stele had been unearthed in Luoyang in 1925 and once belonged to his teacher, Ma Heng.(20120104)
