He began learning flower painting in the hsieh-i (sketching) style from Ch’en Shu. Later he turned to landscapes, studying under Tung Pang-ta (1699-1769) and becoming a leading painter at court. This painting was inspired by the handscroll of sketches from life by Shen Chou (1427-1509) and based on the poetry composed by the Ch’ien-lung Emperor (r. 1736-1795). Portrayed in sections are fruit, birds, and flowers, including a pheasant, peonies, and water caltrop. The emperor’s poems appear among them. The brushwork is finer than that of Shen’s scroll, reflecting Ch’ing court taste.
