Of broad and unusual talent, he was learned in astronomy and geography as well as many philosophical schools. In later years, he resided in Nanking and died there in the attack by T’ai-p’ing rebels on that city. This handscroll, donated by Mr. Lin Tsung-i, was done in 1834 and depicts thatched huts by a lake. Done for the place where Mr. “Fu-t’ing” lived, the tranquil residence of the scholar is simple and pleasing. Wu Ch’ang-shih also wrote a frontispiece in seal script that reads, “Ink Trace of Chou-weng”, which is bold and solid, very much in the manner of bronze-and-stone script calligraphy of the period.
