&*Against the creamy background of this tapestry is rendered the corner of a garden setting. An ornamental rock rises in front of a cedar tree. Wisteria entwines the tree to end in blossoms where two birds frolic—one in flight and the other perched. Below are bamboo, hollyhock, daisy, and spirit fungi. A dragonfly and butterfly appear among the flowers. This tapestry is composed of complementary colored threads of blue, green, and ochre. The light, elegant hues impart an animated and spirited sense to the work. The texture of the cedar bark and moss dots on the rock were added with brush and ink to heighten the sense of volume, thus making this a masterpiece of the Ch’ien-lung era (1736-1795).
