&* The composition of this album is similar to that of “Album of Ceramics,” but the range of works represented is greater, including Deep-blue and Deep-red ware of the Hsuan-te reign (1426-1435), Blue-and-white ware of the Wan-li reign (1573-1619), Lung-ch’uan green-glazed ware, and Ming imitations of Kuan and Ko ware. This album serves as a record of ceramics admired and appreciated by literati and collectors of the time. The curio cabinet “Antiquities Through the Ages” in the National Palace Museum includes ten bronze vessels, as well as an album-catalogue of ten leaves mentioning the measurements of, decorations on, and inscriptions of the works; each is painted with exceptional clarity and faithfulness. Likewise, “Album of Ceramic Masterpieces” and “Album of Ceramics” are also composed of ten leaves and are similar in their placement of painting and text as well as mounting and seals. Perhaps these two albums also record pictures of vessels once contained in curio cabinets, but have been scattered over time. Compared with surviving ceramics from the Ch’ing court collection in the National Palace Museum, perhaps some can be matched with the illustrations here.
