He was a lofty and upright scholar also gifted at poetry and calligraphy. Shen at first studied the style of Dong Qichang, but in later years was greatly influenced by Mi Fu’s. Admired for his calligraphy, Shen was even summoned to the palace to discuss calligraphy with the Kangxi Emperor (Shengzu). His style reflects the tendency then to imitate ancient styles. This work in running script has an elegant slant to the characters, reflecting the influence of Dong Qichang’s style. This work was done at the Chinese age of 54.(20091015)
