&*Shen Ch’üan (native to Hua-t’ing, Kiangsu [modern Shanghai]) was a Presented Scholar (chin-shih) of the K’ang-hsi reign and served as Vice Minister of Rites. Good at poetry and calligraphy, his studies in running script are pure and elegant. In calligraphy, Shen first studied Tung Ch’i-ch’ang’s style, but in later years was strongly influenced by Mi Fu’s. Highly respected for his calligraphy, he was called to court, where he even discussed new and old styles with the emperor. This running script copy of a text by Chou Tun-i (Yüan-kung) reflects the style of imitation in K’ang-hsi and Yung-cheng era calligraphy. The brushwork is fluid as characters lean elegantly in Tung Ch’i-ch’ang’s manner. This was done in 1677 at Shen’s nominal age of 54.
