157&* Li Peiyu (style name Bolin), whose birth and death dates are unknown, was a court artist in the late Qing dynasty. It is only known that he lived in the Beijing-Tianjin area after the Chinese Revolution of 1911, making a living through painting. This work, selected from “Album of Peony Paintings,” depicts precious examples of peonies in three different colors--red, blue, and green. The technique is a mixture of “boneless” washes and “sketching ideas.” The application of the brush and washes are gentle but not turbid, flowing yet not outlining the motifs. All the same, it is able to convey the moist ink and colors much like a watercolor painting, clearly expressing the intersecting layers of blossoms and leaves while also presenting a volumetric effect of three-dimensional space. This work combines gorgeous colors with an unrestrained manner.(20110102)&*故宮書畫圖錄,第二十七冊,頁340-343&*李培雨,字伯霖,生卒年里待考。
