Crab apple blossoms dance in the breeze as a butterfly flies among them, capturing the fleeting existence of plant and insect life. The album leaf is ideally suited for describing this world of detail. The Ch'ing artist Wang Kai wrote in the Mustard Seed Manual of Painting under "Secrets of Painting Butterflies"; "Where there are flowers, one must have butterflies to bring out colors even more". In this work, the flowers and leaves were first outlined in ink and then filled with layers of washes. The flowers also include delicate white pigment, making them stand out in contrast with the verdant leaves. The large and colorful butterfly mingles about, adding a festive touch to this scene. This is the 28th leaf from "Album of Paintings Through the Ages".
