She was a native of Hsiu-shui. She married Ch’ien Lun-kuang and was conferred the title of Tai-shu-jen (noble lady) because of their eldest son Ch’en-chün’s high official position. She specialized in paintings of various subjects such as landscape, figure, flower-and-bird and insects. In this painting, Ch’en fully demonstrates her maturity in forceful brushwork with tender and delicate inktone. Though a sketch from life, the composition and the delineation are carefully rendered. The quails, butterfly, dragonfly, locust, mantis and cricket are all very lifelike. Ch’en is not only an outstanding artist among female artists, but also among all artists.
