The mountain is named after the Chin dynasty (A.D. 265-420) monk Chih-tun (known also as Chih-hsing), who lived in seclusion there and leveled some rocky areas (hsing), which are pictured here. Men and donkeys rest beneath the willows, while others ascend the slope on foot and by sedan chair. The essence of spring is rendered through the moist, fluid qualities of the painting. Yüan Shang-t’ung’s realistic landscapes and carefully drawn figures are reminiscent of the Sung dynasty. The inscription reads: “Spring in Chih Hsing. Summer,on the day ting-chou. Painted deep in the bamboo.” The seal reads “Shu-ming” – Yüan Shang-t’ung’s sobriquet. &*1.〈明元尚統支硎春色〉,收入國立故宮博物院編輯委員會編,《春景山水畫特展圖錄》(臺北:國立故宮博物院,1987年一月初版),頁56。
