In this seemingly simple composition, the artist has depicted a tiny duckling looking out from the side of the path bearing a few clumps of weeds and grass. This, the seventh leaf from the album Li-tai hua-fu chi-ts'e, follows the style of a fine Southern Sung academic painting. The coloring throughout is elegant and light, and the rendering of the duckling is so delicate that every feather of its downy coat seems clearly delineated and soft to the touch. Even though the artist's subject is a common domestic animal, he has still artfully conveyed the duckling's natural charm and liveliness.
