&* The title of this tapestry refers to the following legend; 3 old men met and asked of each other’s age. One of them said, “Each time the ocean turns into a mulberry field, I take down one counter. I have amassed ten counters so far”. This legend was often used as a blessing for long life on birthdays. This work with a light background represents the Yao Terrace and P’eng Isle of immortality as spirit cranes fly in the sky. Though small, the skill and coloring shown here are among the finest. The forms are patternistic yet simple and attractive. The Museum also has 2 album leaves of pavilions of immortals among mountains similar in content, but here only half the composition appears. Parts of this work were damaged and retouched with ink.
