石渠寶笈續編(御書房),第四冊,頁2186&*故宮書畫錄(卷八),第四冊,頁14&*張照(西元一六九一─一七四五年),華亭(今上海松江)人。字得天,號涇南,別號梧囪,又號天瓶居士。清聖祖康熙四十八年(一七O九)進士,官至刑部尚書,諡文敏。深通釋典,研法律,精音樂,尤工書法。張照書法初從董其昌入手,繼乃出入米芾、顏卿。本幅結字縝密,佈置停勻。書體若楷若行,書風淹有顏朱風韻。&*Chang Chao (style name Te-t'ien; sobriquets Ching-nan, Wu-ch'uang, and T'ien-p'ing Chü-shih) was a native of Shanghai. After he passed the metropolitan civil service examination and obtained the chin-shih degree in 1709, he served as an official in the Ministry of Justice. He was posthumously honored with the name Wen-min. He was well-versed with Buddhist scriptures, legal codes, and music, and he was skilled in calligraphy. Chang Chao at first studied the calligraphy of Tung Ch'i-ch'ang after which he studied the works of Mi Fu of the Northern Sung and Yen Chen-ch'ing of the T'ang dynasty. In this hanging scroll, Chang Chao has written tightly structured characters in an even and uniform composition. He has mixed the standard and running or semi-cursive scripts together and created a style full of rhythm.
