He was a native of Ch’ang-chou (Wu-hsien, Kiangsu). In addition to being thoroughly versed in painting, his family’s collection of ancient calligraphy and painting was very rich and thus he was also a learned connoisseur. He was able to model his heart or intuitively understand, and follow with his hand the famous works of the ancient masters. Therefore his painting method was excellent and completely free triteness, and his fame was great in his own time. Within his oeuvre, his paintings of birds and flowers were most prominent, and his reputation was almost equal to that of Yűn Shou-p’ing. His landscape paintings were scarce, but when upon occasion he did one, his style was not commonplace.
