&* The composition of this work is based on one of Ni Tsan’s paintings; the ground lines, however, of both the background and the foreground slant downward to the right. The composition thus lacks the stability that an ordinary level ground line gives, but nevertheless produces a certain liveliness. A native of Chang-shou in Kiangsu province, Sung Chun-yeh’s style-name was Shen-ch’iu, and his sobriquet was Chien-ch’i. During his service at court his highest position was the vice- presidency of the Boarb of War. Sung excelled at painting and calligraphy and was found of painting landscapes. Commissioned to produce the painting depicting the K’ang-hsi Emperor’s inspection tour to the south, he hired the famous painter Wang Hui to work at his home, thus allowing Sung to advance his own painting technique greatly. He was the chief compiler of P’ei-wen-chai shu-hua p’u, a comprehensive annotated catalogue of painting and calligraphy, which was published in 1708 under the command of the K’ang-hsi Emperor.
