&*A river bank extends deep into the distance as mist permeates the cold winter scene. The bank includes clumps of withered reeds with wild geese. The geese in flight approaching those on the bank add a touch of life to an otherwise desolate scene. A fisherman sits huddled below a thatched awning as he hunches over to ward off the cold. He stares out as he waits with his fishing net in the water. The simple composition and refined brushwork here have a serene elegance to them. The same composition appears in the Museum's Fishing inWinter by Yen Wen-kuei. The brushwork in this work, however, appears superior, but it still may have done as late as theYüan or Ming dynasty.&*此圖描寫雪景人物。 &*This painting is of a Snowscape with a figure. A fisherman is sitting below a thatched awning with his hands crossed in front of his chest, bending over at the waist, and hunching his shoulders as if to ward off the cold. His eyes are fixed on the surface of the water, and he waits by his net suspended from the shore hoping fish get trapped in the net. The pose of the figure is vivid, lively, and life-like. The opposite bank of the river extends infinitely into the distance. Mist and fog permeate the scene, and the cold atmosphere is compelling. By the shore are clumps of withered reeds and several wild geese dot the distant bank. Another flock of geese is flying in the skies, thus balancing the composition. They add liveliness to an otherwise cold and desolate riverbank. The brushwork in this painting is simple and pure, being filled with the idea of classic elegance and tranquility. The artist has applied the powder method, using white power on the slope and reeds to impart the atmosphere of a desolate winter day.&*故宮書畫錄(卷五),第三冊,頁143-144&*故宮書畫圖錄,第三冊,頁93-94
