In his youth Ch’ien, together with Ch’ien Tsai (1708-1793 A.D.) and Chang Keng (1785-1760 A.D.), studied bird-and-flower and figure painting with Ch’ien’s grandmother, Ch’en Shu (1660-1736 A.D.). Later he devoted himself to quiet landscapes of great profundity. His fame equaled that of Tung Pang-ta (ca. 1699-1769 A.D.). The painting depicts a river bank covered with snow. The relationship between mountain forms is lucid and provides a structural basis for the river and sky which have been left unpainted, retaining the white color of the paper. The painting imports a sense of tranquillity and harmony. The pines are simple but strong, the brushwork elegant, and the effect distinct.
