He received the chin-shih degree in 1727 and pursued on official career which culminated in his appointment as Vice-President of the Board of Rites and member of the Imperial Secretariat. He began to paint flowers and plants in the style of Yün Shou-p’ing, but because the ideas for his paintings were dictated by the Ch’ien-lung Emperor and experimentation was discouraged, most of his works are characterized by artisan-like brushwork, unmodulated ink, and thick, sensuous colors which lack natural vitality and rhythm. He occasionally did informal dotted-ink sketches which display much more freedom and spontaneity.
