He used the style name Fu-ch’en and the sobriquet Tung-shan. In 1733 he achieved the rank of chin-shih and in 1737 he was one of the compilers of the Shih Ch’ü Pao Chi, the Mi Tien Chu Lin, and the His Ch’ing ku chien, among other collated works. An excellent calligrapher and painter, Tung painted landscapes in the style of the Yüan dynasty masters; he was a faithful pupil of Wang Yüan-ch’i, the Ch’ing master (1642-1715). His works display elegant and light monschrome ink brushwork. In this painting, the artist has used a heavily charged brush to apply washes, without losing smoothness and grace. It is obvious that Tung was a superior and creative artist.
