He assisted in compiling the imperial catalogue of art and served in the Ministry of Rites. Gifted at painting and calligraphy, his style followed that of Tung Ch’i-ch’ang, achieving the clarity and elegance of Yüan artists. This painting represents a tall mountain laced by steep paths curving through passes and dotted with buildings. A rushing river winds through the lower left as travelers make their way from the settlement in the lower right along a path built over the water. The outlining and texturing of the mountain have an archaic atmosphere, and the dense brushwork complements the composition that is nearly overflowing with writhing forms.
