Because he lived in Pao-shan, his sobriquet was Pao-shan-tzu. Elegant and casually mannered, he was righteous and renown for his filial piety and amiability. He excelled at poetry, classical prose, the semi-cursive script of calligraphy, and possessed a particularly keen understanding of painting. He studied calligraphy with Chu Yün-ming (1460-1526) and painting with Wen Cheng-ming (1470-1559). Quite talented at drawing from life, Lu captured the styles of Hsu Hsi and Huang Ch’ üan. His birds, flowers, bamboo and rocks seem as if created by heaven. Lu was fond of imitating the landscapes of Sung painters, and would occasionally create his own distinct features. The fragrance of duckweed and the colors of maple flow throughout this painting, while mist rises from a river. The scholars on the bridge and in the pavilion have been painted with abbreviated brushstrokes, and the mountains and rocks have been painted with angular brushstrokes. This painting was executed by Lu in his late years and is the fourteenth leaf from the album, Fan Paintings by Ming Artists. &*1.王耀庭、張華芝,〈明陸治畫山水〉,收入王耀庭、張華芝編,《明陸治作品展覽圖錄》(臺北:國立故宮博物院,1992年初版),頁71-72。
