"Record of the Yueh-yang Lookout" was written by the famed scholar-official Fan Ch'ung-yen (989-1052). He sang the praise of this lookout in Yueh-yang County, Hunan, by using the lyrical beauty of the scenery as a vehicle for personal expression. It stands out in the literature dealing with this site. Chu Yun-ming was a famous calligrapher in Soochow during the middle Ming. He excelled at standard, running, and cursive scripts. This work in semi-standard script has elements of cursive script. The characters are small yet expansive and based on the style of Yen Chen-ch'ing (709-785) with elements of small standard script from the Wei-Chin era (3rd-5th c.). Spirit is emphasized over precision in this work from "Fans by Ming Calligraphers."
