This painting was originally modeled after a handscroll by Tung Yüan (fl.957-975) entitled “Mist Over Summer Mountains,” but here the composition has been altered to suit the vertical hanging scroll format. The landscape is true to the style of the early master Tung Yüan. The brushwork and rendering of the forms for the mountains, bluffs, and sandy banks reveal a fundamental beauty in a most common and simple appearance. This work was done in 1737, when the artist was 45-years-old.
