His style name was Shih-ku and his sobriquets were Keng-yen san-jen, Ch’ing-hui chu-jen, Wu-mu shan-jen, and Chien-men ch’iao-k’o. He studied landscape painting with Wang Shih-min (1592-1680) and became one of the “Four Great Masters of the Ch’ing Dynasty.” A broad expanse of river stretches score upon score of mountains and valleys. Clusters of temples and cottages are scattered amidst the thick forests. In the foreground, three monks leisurely stroll in the shade of barren trees as a fisherman attends to his business upstream. With these few human figures, the viewer’s eyes are drawn into contact with the vast rambling landscape. Wang Hui executed this painting in 1693, when he was in his 61st year.
