His style name was K’ung-chang, his sobriquets I-an and Hsü-ch’iao. He excelled at calligraphy and painting landscapes. Beginning his painting with Wen Cheng-ming, he expanded his repertory with the study of Sung dynasty works and perfected them with the study of the Yüan. Flowers, bamboo and rocks were also excellent. The work depicts a flock of geese alighting on a stretch of level beach – some have already settled among the water reads and folded their wings, others still hover far in the distance. A scene of dusky autumn with settling frost, it possesses a tone of skin-chilling melancholy. In this respect can one say that the content reigns supreme in this painting. &* Xiang Shengmo (style name Kongzhang; sobriquets Yian, Xuqiao) was Xiang Yuanbian’s grandson. Gifted at calligraphy and painting landscapes, he first studied the style of Wen Zhengming and later included those of the Song and Yuan masters, making him the most gifted painter in the Xiang clan. This work depicts shoals and reeds along with flocks of wild geese resting and flying (some in formation). The sky above the expansive river has a tinge of cool autumn at dusk, imparting a feeling of cold desolation to the viewer while demonstrating the artist’s success in conveying poetic sentiment. A Xiang Shengmo seal here reads, “Literary Grandson from the Hall of Heavenly Sounds,” revealing Xiang’s artistic reliance on his grandfather.
