White clouds skirt the mountain; houses, where gentlemen sit talking leisurely, lie half-hidden by the thick forest. In his landscapes Ku I-te (whose style name was Yüan-chih) emulated Wang Meng. He was a noted calligrapher and portraitist. As he seldom produced commissioned works, his paintings are few, and consequently all the more treasured.
