&*Lu Chih, style name Shu-p’ing, sobriquet Pao-shan-tzu, was a native of Soochow, Kiangsu province. He was renown for his filial piety and loyal friendship. An accomplished poet, writer, calligrapher and painter, he was the student of such artistic luminaries as Chu Yün-ming (1460-1526) and Wen Cheng-ming (1470-1559). His paintings were clear and graceful, and gave full play to his idiosyncratic style. Lu Chih’s fame is almost comparable to that of Wen Cheng-ming’s. An old temple sits on the side of a cliff, and a long bridge connects the cliff to a shore. A scholar leads a child across the bridge to the temple. This painting depicts the scenery of Shih-hu. The bridge shown is Hsing-ch’un bridge, the mountain is Mt. Lanka, and the temple is known as Chih-p’ing temple. Many painters from the Wu region used this theme in their works. In this picture, Lu has combined the brushwork of Ni Tsan and the ancient method of applying green and blue color. Lu executed the painting in a seemingly carefree manner resounding with the light and graceful air of a literati. This is the tenth leaf from An Album of Mounted Fan Paintings by Ming Artists. &*1.
