Deep in the mountains by a large pine and various trees, bamboo, and rocks is a gurgling brook, from which a tiger drinks in a pose of alertness. A hawk is perched in a branch of the pine in the upper right and looks down at the tiger, ready to take off at a moment's notice. To the side of the work is a signature that reads "Kuei-chen," but it appears to have been added by a later hand. Li Kuei-chen was a Taoist who specialized in painting tigers and is said to have set up a tree platform in the mountains to observe the activities of tigers--even imitating their movements to understand this majestic animal. This is from Album of Famous Paintings Through the Ages.
