&* Chiang P’u, a native of Kiangsu province, was a chin-shih civil service candidate in the Yung-cheng era (1723-1735). The son of the painter Chiang T’ing-hsi, he also excelled at painting flowers. “Silk reeler” refers to katydids, relatives of crickets, and they are known as “weaving ladies”. Like crickets, they are active in autumn. When kept in a greenhouse, however, they can survive the cold of winter. The plum tree and dahlia are plants that blossom in late winter and early spring. When the Ch’ien-lung Emperor (r. 1736-1795) heard greenhouse katydids humming in early spring, Chiang P’u did this work and purposely placed these autumn insects in a spring scene. Chiang was thus praised in the numerous inscriptions by officials here. &*1.
