&*This work represents the theme of the "old fisherman" from The Songs of Ch'u, written by Ch'ü Yüan (343-278 BC). After being cast out unfairly from court, this patriot roamed around the marshy land composing verses. One day, an old fisherman asked him, "Sir, are you not a gentleman? What brings you here?"Ch'ü Yüan replied, "The world is corrupt; only I am pure. Everyone is drunk; onluIam sober. Thus, I've been banished." This work reveals Ch'ü’s haggard expression and withered body from his wandering. The old fisherman listens to but does not deride Ch'ü. The fisherman places his foot in the water, thus illustrating Ch'ü’s description of still being able to wash one's feet in the water(society) when it is dirty.&*1.
