A grandson of Wang Shih-min(1592-1680), Wang Yűan-ch’i is included among the Four Great Masters of the Ch’ing Dynasty. He received his chin-shih civil service degree in 1670 and served as Superintendent of the Capital Granaries. A profoundly melancholy spirit pervades Wang Yűan-ch’i’s late works. In his inscription on this painting, Wang Yűan-ch’i notes the similarities of his work to that of Ni Tsan (1301-74) and Huang Kuang-wang (1269-1354), but one actually sees evidence of Wu Chen’s (1280-1354) style as well. Consequently, a deeply cheerful spirit resides in the elegant consonance. Wang Yűan-ch’i painted this landscape when he was 70-years-old. &*1.江兆申,〈清王原祁仿倪瓚山水〉,收入胡賽蘭編,《清王原祁畫山水畫軸特展》(臺北:國立故宮博物院,1997年初版),頁131。
