石渠寶笈續編(重華宮),第三冊,頁1731&*故宮書畫錄(卷八),第四冊,頁94&*故宮書畫圖錄,第十冊,頁159-160&* 蒼松兩本,虬枝盤結,於夜霧暝濛之中,樹後盡作倒垂松影。細觀此畫,松與影上下枝有對稱處。或是墨汁未乾之時,將畫紙摺疊,使畫成部分移印於另一端,故松影錯雜,意象空濛,異於成法也。據印文為八十歲畫,干支署戊子,應為七十七歲畫。&* A native of Ch’ang-shu, Kiangsu province, Wang Hui was already a capable painter when he met Wang Chien and became his student, and later Wang Shih-min’s. He accompanied those two masters and visited many great collections of painting. Though copying of many ancient works he was able to acquire brush techniques both ancient and modern. The painting depicts two luxuriant pines with twisting branches, surrounded by evening mist. Behind is an inverted image of the same two trees. One possible explanation for this unusual feature is that Wang Hui originally used a double sheet of paper, and when he had completed the pine trees the ink penetrated to the undersheet. The artist then took advantage of the faint image to paint this scroll. Wang Hui’s seal states that the painting was completed when he was eighty years old.
