The painting depicts ten deer wandering in the mountains. In China, the deer is considered as a symbol of longevity as well as prosperity. The latter because the characters “deer” and “prosperity” are homonyms, so are the characters “cypress” and “hundred”. Therefore, this painting of ten deer bears the meaning of “hundred prosperity” or “endless prosperity”.
