Liu Sung-nien began his career as a court painter under Emperor Hsiao-tsung (r. 1163-1189).This is the 12th leaf from the album “Collected Gems of Famous paintings”. A bodhisattva is bedecked with jewels sitting on an ornamented seat. Three biases (monks) stand in attendance. They look attentively at the devil and the Šàriputra Buddha in front of the bodhisattva Mañjušrì. The devil in her left hand holds an offering of flowers. She twists flowers with her fingers and turns around. The monk appears as if talking to her to add a sense add liveliness to the scene. Despite the title, the subject here appears to be a section from larger work of “Vimalakìrti Discussing the Way .”Thus, this album leaf may have may have once been part of part of a hand scroll.
