&*The artist has captured the spirit of both mounts and riders as they gallop across this painting, neck and neck. A superb composition, forcefully executed, the brushwork, ink, and coloring of this piece are singularly done. An inscription in the upper left reads "Painted in the spring of 627 by Wei Yen." Wei Yen was from ch'ang-an (present-day Sian) but lived in Szechwan. From a family of painters, he became more famous than his father. The horses he painted-whether prancing or resting, foraging or drinking, startled or calm-are masterfully rendered and are extremely lifelike. His paintings of pine trees and stones are even more remarkable and required much time to complete. Actually small but seemingly monumental, Tu Fu wrote several poems in praise of Wei Yen’s paintings of pines and horses. &*1.
