&*Fan K’uan (fl.early 11th cent.) was a native of Hua-yuan, Shansi. His style name was chung-li. Fan K’uan worked during the early years of the Northern Sung Dynasty. At first he studied the landscapes of Li Ch’eng and Ching Hao. Later he established a style of his own. Most of the landscapes attributed towering peaks with tones like pent-up steel. This painting on the other hand, depicts earthcovered mountains with washed of ink , resulting in a rich moist scene. The painting may well reflect another aspect of Fan K’uan’s work. The inscription in the style of the Sung Emperor Hui-tsung may be a later interpolation.
