石渠寶笈續編(乾清宮),第一冊,頁445 &*故宮書畫錄(第三卷),第一冊,頁180 &*Chao Ting(style name Yüan-chen)was a native of Wen-hsi, Shansi, Learned in the Classics and history, he passed the chin-shih civil service examination in the Ch'ung-ning era(1102-1106). He accompanied emperor Kao-tsung when the court moved to the south in 1127. He rose to the ranks of Vice-Director of the Department of State Affairs, Manager of Affairs in The Secretarial-Chancellery and Concurrent Palace Secretary. However, when Chao came into disagreement over the peace policy of prime minister Ch'in Kuei, he was cashiered, whereupon he lived in the Hsing-hua Circuit, Chang-chou, and Chao-chou. For the five years he spent Chao-chou he refused to see any visitors, and when he moved to the Chi-yang Circuit, he went on a fast and starved to death at the age of 63. With the ascension of the new emperor, Hsiao-tsung(r.1163-1189), Chao Ting was posthumously entitled Chung-chien("Loyal and Straightforward"). This kind of memorial is a simplified version of a directive. In the T'ang dynasty it was called a pang-tzu or lu-tzu, but in the Sung it began to be called cha-tzu. This memorial is in the style of Yen Chen-ch'ing (709-785) and it is particularly strong and imposing.
